Technology Overview: SafeGuard™ H2O In-situ Reagent Generation
SafeGuard™ H2O is an advanced on-site, on-demand, automated non-toxic reagent generation system that is advancing the treatment of inorganic and trace metal contaminants and supporting carbon reduction targets by replacing the need to deliver and handle toxic bulk chemicals to treatment plants. The technology helps to remove a wide range of heavy metals and nutrients from water and wastewater as well as inhibit lead, copper and iron corrosion in water transport systems. The novel in-situ process produces reagents at a cost demonstrated to be significantly below that of the same reagents delivered in bulk form. On-site reagent generation is an affordable, non-hazardous and environmentally sustainable solution — providing a 60% cost savings and a rapid return on investment.
View ResourceAMS Talks: A Proven, Cost-Effective Solution for California Water Utilities Impacted by Proposed Cr6 Ruling
In December 2022, the State of California published its long-awaited recommendation for a regulatory limit for hexavalent chromium (Cr6) in water of 10 parts per billion. According to the California State Water Resources Control Board, there are more than 2,600 community systems with elevated Cr6 levels serving nearly 13 million people.
This proposed regulation unequivocally identifies AMS and its in-situ stannous generation technology, SafeGuard™ H2O, as the best available technology to treat Cr6 and provide safe drinking water to the millions of consumers across California, many of whom live in underserved communities.
SafeGuard™ H2O has been thoroughly evaluated and proven to reduce Cr6 to non-detect levels. The technology features an automated treatment design that incorporates real-time online Cr6 monitoring to ensure regulatory standards are met continuously.
Watch the latest episode of AMS Talks featuring AMS CEO Rick Bacon and Industry Consultant Nadia Abboud who discuss how this proven and cost-effective solution can treat most of the wells with high Cr6 levels, giving a peace of mind to water utilities impacted by this new regulation.
View ResourceApplication Brief: SafeGuard™ H2O Hexavalent Chromium Treatment System Demonstration at Joshua Basin Water District
In the Fall of 2022, the Joshua Basin Water District undertook a demonstration of the SafeGuard™ H2O technology to reduce Cr6 down to non-detect levels. SafeGuard H2O proved to be a highly automated process that provided accurate and reliable in-situ reagent generation to reduce Cr6 to below 1 ppb. The capability of SafeGuard H2O to consistently remove Cr6 to non-detect levels creates the opportunity for Joshua Basin Water District and other utilities to blend water from Cr6-contaminated wells and achieve overall system compliance. With SafeGuard H2O, the capital cost of bringing a system into Cr6 compliance can be mitigated by eliminating the need for treatment at all wells.

SafeGuard™ H2O Hexavalent Chromium (Cr6) Demonstration at the City of Banning Water Treatment Plant
In search of a reliable and economical treatment solution for Cr6 contamination, the City of Banning undertook a demonstration of the SafeGuard™ H2O in-situ reagent generation system to remove Cr6 down to non-detect levels. The fully automated SafeGuard™ H2O technology uses a certified precursor and an in-situ electrolytic generator to create a non-toxic stannous reagent onsite and on demand. The process is simple, effective, and carbon neutral.
